Root Canal Therapy in Sugar Hill

Root canal treatment is the most common endodontic procedure. This therapy is performed when a tooth has become infected or inflamed and needs to be restored, due to problems involving the soft pulp or nerve tissue inside the tooth.

Do I Need a Root Canal?

You may need a root canal if the dental pulp of one of your teeth becomes inflamed or infected. The pulp is located inside the tooth, underneath the layers of enamel and dentin in the pulp chamber and root canals, which extend from the crown of the tooth to the tip of the tooth’s roots. The material contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue. Although dental pulp is important to the growth and development of the tooth, a mature tooth can survive without it after root canal.

Several things can cause dental pulp to become inflamed or infected:

  • decay
  • traumatic injury to the tooth
  • multiple procedures on the tooth
  • cracks or chips in the enamel

Inflamed or infected dental pulp must be treated; if it is not, it can lead to more serious dental problems like an abscess.

The following symptoms could indicate that you need a root canal:

  • pain or discomfort
  • sensitivity to hot or cold foods or beverages
  • tooth discoloration
  • swelling

In some cases, there are no symptoms of a problem. Only an X-ray can confirm the need for root canal.

Treatment Details

Prior to root canal, the tooth is numbed for a completely comfortable experience. You should not feel any pain during the treatment.

An opening is created in the crown of the tooth, and infected, inflamed or dead dental pulp is removed from the pulp chamber and root canals. The spaces are carefully disinfected and shaped. The canals are then filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha or something similar. The root canals are completely sealed off to prevent any bacteria or debris from entering the space. A temporary filling may be placed over the tooth to protect its opening and later replaced with a permanent restoration.

After root canal therapy, your tooth should look, feel and function just like a natural, healthy tooth. Teeth that have had a root canal can last many years with the proper care and attention. You should be able to enjoy your favorite foods, and speak and smile confidently, thanks to root canal therapy.
