Orthodontics in Sugar Hill & Johns CreekOrthodontic Care in Johns Creek, Sugar Hill, Suwanee, and Buford

Orthodontic treatment straightens or shifts teeth into the proper position and alignment. Straight teeth are easier to keep clean and less susceptible to dental disease. They are more likely to remain strong and healthy for many years. Not to mention — they look beautiful!

The team at Dentistry of Sugar Hill offers a complete selection of orthodontic treatment options, including traditional braces and removable aligners. We are trained to deliver safe, effective orthodontic treatment that suits each patient’s unique dental needs and personal preferences.

Am I a Candidate for Orthodontic Treatment?

You might qualify for orthodontics if you are troubled by any of the following:

  • crooked teeth
  • crowded teeth
  • gaps or spaces between the teeth
  • overbite – upper front teeth stick out over the lower teeth
  • underbite – lower teeth stick out too far forward
  • open bite – the front teeth don’t meet when the back teeth bite together

The type of orthodontic treatment recommended to you will be based on the severity of your problem(s).

Dental Braces

Conventional dental braces consist of metal brackets adhered to the teeth and connected by metal wires. This system puts slight pressure on the teeth to shift them into the proper position and alignment. The wires are periodically tightened throughout the duration of treatment.

Some braces have ceramic, tooth-colored brackets and wires. These are less noticeable in the mouth than metal braces, but function the same way.

Lingual braces have metal brackets and wires, but are attached to the back of the teeth.

Total treatment time with braces depends on the individual case. Most patients wear braces from one to three years.

Braces are not painful, but they do put some restrictions on diet. Foods that are hard, crunchy or sticky should be avoided. Occasionally, piece of a wire or a bracket may irritate the lips, gums or insides of the cheeks, but these problems do require some follow-up care. After completing orthodontic treatment with braces, a retainer may be recommended to maintain the results.

Invisalign

Braces & Invisalign Buford & SuwaneeInvisalign, a modern alternative to braces, is popular among patients that want to straighten teeth discreetly. The Invisalign system consists of sets of clear plastic aligners or trays, similar to teeth whitening trays. The aligners are worn for 20 to 22 hours per day, and removable for eating and cleaning. Every few weeks, the aligners are switched out for the next set in the sequence. Our dentists monitor treatment periodically to check progress and answer any questions.

Depending on the severity of the case, 10 to 20 sets of Invisalign aligners total may be worn. Adults typically complete Invisalign treatment in less than a year, whereas teenagers may need up to 18 months to see the desired results. A retainer may be recommended to maintain the results of Invisalign treatment long term.

Invisalign trays are custom-created to fit snugly to the teeth, and rarely cause irritation. They are easy to clean and do not put any restrictions on diet.
